Scuba diving from boats is an everyday occurrence. Whether on a private vessel or one of the many charter dive boats available worldwide, divers are frequently not aware of the special procedures and etiquette used when boat diving. This course is designed to introduce divers to different types of boat diving and the skills needed to plan and conduct a boat dive with maximum safety.

Prerequisites for Enrollment: Are You Ready?

SDI Open Water Scuba Diver, SDI Junior Open Water Scuba Diver, or equivalent or current enrollment in one of those courses.

Minimum age 18, 10 with parental consent.

What Skills Will You Learn?

In the SDI Boat Diver course, you will gain knowledge and experience in:

Plan a boat dive and Briefing on dock before departure

Review of boat diving procedures

Captain’s brief and travel to dive destination

Entry, Exit and Log Dives

Care of equipment

Attempt to use a different types of boat s or, at least, use a different entry point from the boat during the course

We recommend that after this course, you participate in the Advanced Adventure course. This is the second step in your training journey. After completing it, you'll be certified to dive up to 30 meters, gaining more skills through five additional dives.

The Deep Diver Course is ideal for divers who want to explore farther and descend beyond basic training limits. Deeper sites like walls, wrecks, and unique marine life become accessible, along with the skills to understand the risks and rewards of deep diving.

What can I do after receiving my certificate?

Upon successful completion of this course, graduates may:

  1. Conduct dives with other certified divers at the same or higher level of certification.
  2. Conduct dives that do not require decompression.
  3. Enroll in other SDI Specialties, or the SDI Advanced Diver Development program.
How long does the course take?

The duration of the course varies, but it typically takes 1 day to complete, including theory sessions and open water dives.

Do I need prior diving experience?

Yes, prior diving experience is required. This course is designed for Open Water or Advanced Open Water Divers and want to expand their knowledge and skills in diving with boats.

What equipment do I need?

No, you don’t need to have your own scuba gear. We provide all necessary equipment as part of the course fee. However, we recommend purchasing your own mask, snorkel, and fins for a better fit and added comfort. If you’re interested in buying your own scuba gear, we offer special discounts for students on high-quality equipment.

Is the SDI Open Water certification accepted worldwide?

Yes, all SDI certifications are recognized worldwide. Once certified, you can dive in various locations, but your maximum depth limit will depend on your training level. Open Water Divers can typically dive up to 18 meters (60 feet).
